About Heather Joy Thompson, Esq.


Heather Joy Thompson, founder  of PerfectlyCuratedLife.com, is a bonne vivante at heart and  enjoys entertaining, decorating, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She is also a lawyer and career diplomat at the United States Department of State. She most recently served as a Diplomat-in-Residence and Senior Fellow at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs. From 2015-2017 she was an Economic Affairs Officer at the United States Embassy in Mexico City. Heather Joy previously served two tours at the Department of State in Washington, D.C., where she worked on political-military affairs and educational exchange programs. At the beginning of her career as a diplomat, she was the American Citizen Services Chief at the United States Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa. While in Johannesburg, Heather Joy co-founded Abafazi Ambassadors, a successful exchange between female professionals at the U.S. Embassy in South Africa and students from The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, in Henley-Upon-Klip, South Africa. Ms. Thompson previously was a Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Her travels and studies have taken her to more than 30 countries in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, Central America, and Australia.

Heather Joy is a native of Southfield, Michigan. She earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Studio Art from Spelman College. She developed a passion for the arts during childhood, and while at Spelman studied Renaissance art and Italian in Florence, Italy. Heather Joy entered Wayne State University Law School in 2002. While there, she distinguished herself as a member of Jessup International Law Moot Court team and refined her understanding of European Union and international trade and negotiations while studying in Thessaloniki, Greece, and Passau, Germany.  She earned a Juris Doctor in May, 2005 and is a member of the Michigan Bar Association.

Prior to joining the State Department, Heather Joy worked for Sean “Diddy” Combs, in Manhattan, New York, where she headed his “Vote or Die” campaign. Ms. Thompson has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Where Are They Now, and in the pages of the New York Times, Town & Country Magazine, Ebony, JET, and PEOPLE.com.

Heather Joy is a stalwart supporter of women’s and girls’ issues – and has worked for two decades on programs to increase health awareness, safeguard reproductive rights, and expand educational opportunities for marginalized women and girls. Her passion for the arts has never flagged - she collects textiles and art from around the world and chronicles the beauty and diversity of her surroundings on Instagram – @perfectlycuratedlife. .
